More fame and glory for Sea The Stars

Christopher Tsui’s homebred Sea The Stars put up another scintillating performance to win the Gr.1 Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown yesterday. The ground may have been softer than ideal, but the three-year-old son of Cape Cross put his doubters to the sword, beating the Irish Derby winner Fame And Glory (Montjeu) by two and a half lengths, with the Irish 2,000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes winner Mastercraftsman (Danehill Dancer) in third.

The Ballydoyle pacemakers set a strong pace but as they dropped back approaching the straight, Mastercraftsman took the lead. His advantage was soon lost to his stablemate Fame And Glory, who took control hotly pursued by Sea The Stars. The latter took the lead over a furlong out and powered clear to win with something in hand.

Sea The Stars, who has now won a Gr.1 race every month since May, has it all; perfect temperament, excellent conformation, is a brilliant racehorse at distances from a mile to a mile and a half, as well as having a family bursting at the seams with Gr.1 winners and successful sires.

His next start is likely to be the Gr.1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, though he may be forced to run on softer ground than he likes. His win in the Irish Champion also guaranteed him a place in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Turf.
